What is Chirp-Web?

Chirp-Web is a web-based radio memory file converter. It lets you convert channel/memory configurations between different amateur radio models without installing any software. It is powered by CHIRP, which supports 189+ radios.

Getting a Radio Image File

Chirp-Web converts between existing image files — it does not communicate with radios directly. To get an .img file from your radio:

  1. Install the CHIRP desktop app
  2. Connect your radio to your computer via USB or serial cable
  3. Open CHIRP and go to Radio → Download From Radio (or press Ctrl+D)
  4. Select your serial port and radio model, then click OK
  5. Once the download completes, go to File → Save As to save the .img file

You can also use .csv or .chirp files exported from CHIRP.

How to Convert

There are two ways to start a conversion:

From an uploaded file

  1. Upload — Select the "Upload File" tab and choose your radio image file.
  2. Detect — Click "Detect Radio" to auto-identify your source radio. The detected vendor and model will be shown.
  3. Select destination — Pick the target vendor and model from the dropdowns.
  4. Convert — Click "Convert". The converter will map as many memories as possible to the destination radio.
  5. Download — Click the download link to save the converted file. The link expires after 10 minutes.

From a preset memory list

  1. Select preset — Switch to the "Preset Memories" tab and choose a predefined frequency list from the dropdown (e.g. NOAA Weather, FRS/GMRS, Marine VHF).
  2. Select destination — Pick the target vendor and model.
  3. Convert & Download — Click "Convert", then download the result.

Preset Memory Lists

Chirp-Web includes 20 predefined frequency lists from the CHIRP project. These cover common channel allocations for different countries and services:

Preset memories are converted to the destination radio format just like uploaded files. Channels outside the radio's frequency range will be skipped.

Writing the Converted File to Your Radio

  1. Open the converted .img file in the CHIRP desktop app (File → Open)
  2. Review the memories to make sure everything looks correct
  3. Connect your destination radio via USB or serial cable
  4. Go to Radio → Upload To Radio (or press Ctrl+U)
  5. Select your port and radio model, then click OK

What Gets Converted?

The converter transfers as much data as the destination radio supports:

Memories that fall outside the destination radio's frequency range or exceed its channel capacity are skipped. Any skipped channels and warnings are shown in the result.

Supported File Formats

ExtensionDescription
.imgCHIRP radio image (most common)
.chirpCHIRP native format
.csvCHIRP CSV export
.icfIcom radio image
.dat, .binVarious vendor formats

Troubleshooting

"Could not detect radio from file"
The uploaded file doesn't match any known radio format. Make sure you're uploading a valid CHIRP image file, not a renamed or corrupted file.
Many memories skipped
The destination radio likely has a narrower frequency range or fewer channels than the source. Check the warnings list for details on each skipped channel.
Download link expired
Download links are valid for 10 minutes. Re-run the conversion to get a new link.
